There's a great article about space linked in my signature...a lot depends on climate.

 

My birds can spend days on end inside the coop during winter as I don't have a covered and wind blocked run.

Even 6 sqft per bird on floor, and an additional 2 sqft per bird on roost boards, can get a bit tight after a few days.

Great article on VENTILATION, one of THE MOST IMPORTANT aspects of coop design.

Fantastic treatise to help decide how much SPACE your chickens need.

 

Chicken math is not just 'addition'...but also should include Division, Multiplication and especially Subtraction!!!
