I've been lurking this forum without a membership for about three months in my preparations to be a backyard chicken keeper. I almost feel like I know some of the more outspoken fo the folks here, and I've already enjoyed learning quite a bit from you all. I look forward to learning more, and eventually being an active contributor in helping others as well. 
I've had chickens before, but like many first-timers, I got a breed based on one consideration only and ease of local acquisition. I got them at about three months old, I'd guess, and while they were very friendly, and easy to handle, when we had to leave the farm we were on for medical reasons, we had to give up the chickens as well.
I own my own property now, and I'm much older and wiser. I still have a lot to learn about raising birds though!
