duck water smells like pine oil

Hi I'm Cathy. I'm new to the forum. I have 20 assorted ducks. The are using a kiddie pool for a pond, and I've noticed it has started to take on the smell of pine oil. I thought it was just me, but my sister-in-law next door also noticed it. Does anyone know what would cause this? I would appreciate any input on this. Thanks.
 
I'd scrub the daylights out of the sucker and maybe even bleach it a bit and let it sit in the sun (away from the ducks) for they day, then fill it back up.
 
Sounds good. I actually have a second one stored, so I will put it out for the ducks while I scrub and sun the other one. I appreciate your response.
 
No, the pool is not near any pine trees. In fact it is under a tarped enclosure. I am totally at a loss to figure it out. Thanks for your response. I have plans to change out the pool tomorrow as I had three acres to mow today.
