What Color?

So, we are going to do some chicken coop renovating this summer, and we are having trouble picking out a color. Any suggestions? (color, fun stuff we could do with the coop etc.)

Leave it to me to suggest the never popular, never sexy, plain old high gloss white. Seriously, depending on your climate, that may be an option to consider. The reason? Dark colors absorb heat. I painted mine barn red to match an existing barn and even on a not so hot day, with the sun shining on it, it's too hot to put your hand on it. That heat reflects inward as well. Maybe as much as 5 to 10 degrees hotter inside than outside when the sun is low enough to hit it straight on and that is with all vent options fully open. That is not good......and the birds are left to pay the price for it. On a really hot day, with not much wind, I will likely have to hang a box fan in there to help them out.

So again, depending on climate and location (is the coop placed in the shade?) plain old white, with all manner of colored trim boards to set it off.

Yeah it is on the edge of a little forest (not much sunlight, but blocks wind). So I don't think that would really matter to much. We didn't paint the coop it was there before we moved in. We would not have painted it like that :P But we do have hot summers and cold winters so thanks for the suggestion. :)

I would not be worried about the color....but the apparent lack of ventilation and maybe even of size.

Great article on VENTILATION, one of THE MOST IMPORTANT aspects of coop design.

Fantastic treatise to help decide how much SPACE your chickens need.

Chicken math is not just 'addition'...but also should include Division, Multiplication and especially Subtraction!!!

Yeah I know, we have a whole cut in the top of the coop. I have been begging my friend to help me build a better one (we didn't build this one, and I'm not very handy), but since he is really busy, I have to settle with painting it.

I went to my local Sherwin Williams and got some paint for cheap that they wanted to get rid of.

They got it from another store and where selling it to get it out of their store.

Got my paint for $5 a gallon.

I just matched the color of my house.

Kinda let it blend in so to speak.
