Chicken farmer in the making

Thread Starter
Hi,
I'm really, really new on keeping chickens. So far, we have built the coop and run. We hope to have chickens within the next 2 weeks. I need some advice on bedding for the run and the coop please? I live on the coast in South Africa, near Cape Town.

Welcome to BYC! I'm glad you joined us! :)

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele

Welcome to Backyard chickens.  We have a very active greeter here that is from South Africa,  "CTKen"  I am sure he will come across your  post and will  provide excellent information for you.

You may want to put "South Africa," in the search box to see if there is a thread for your country.    Have you checked out the Learning Center, it is a great place to start a poultry education.

Hi and welcome to BYC - glad that you have joined us. There are many options for coop bedding, but personally i use dried grass clippings and leaves - they cost nothing and make a great, almost work-free bedding. Maybe type "coop bedding options" and "run flooring options" in the search box and see what pops up to get a good idea of the kinds of things members use.

Good luck

Welcome to BYC :frow I'm from SA myself, lived in the Klein Karoo before emigrating. There are loads of great coop designs here to give you some ideas:

And you can also post all your questions, concerns, etc in this section for more advice:
