My Aracuna is 8 months old, been laying for 2-3 months. A dog broke into our backyard a couple weeks ago, but we caught it before it did too much damage to the chicken. The chicken kept laying for a week or so, but now sits in the roost on the egg spot, but can't seem to push one out. Like she is constipated. Every time I open the door she purrs like a cat, but very mean sounding purr like she is trying to tell me to bugger off. I pick her up and put her near water and food, and she eats a little and drinks a little, but then runs back and stays there all day and night. Is she going to die if she doesn't push an egg every day???

Thank you.

It sounds as if she has gone broody. She wants to set and hatch eggs.

Chickens don't necessarily lay every day anyway, so no, she won't die if she doesn't push an egg out every day. As the others have said, it sure sounds like she's going broody and wants to hatch some eggs. I'm a little confused...you keep saying "chicken' in the singular, so is she the only one you have? They are very social and don't like being alone. Also do you mean she's sitting on the nest or sitting on the roost?

1 week update:

I have a couple other chickens that were born within the same week last October. They are still laying fine, but the aracuna is still stuck to the roost. I have to pick her up to move her out to get some food and water. She will eat and drink for 30 seconds then run back inside and purr like a velociraptor. She has not laid an egg in almost 2 weeks now. Is she going to be doing this for another month, or all year? Is this normal still? Thanks!
