pine shavings for my Muscovy ducks

Is it ok to use pine shavings in their outside pen ? I have 7 baby ducks they were born on May 2016 and I also 2 that were born on Nov. 1 2015 that i raised in the house and they have their own pen....
 
Pine shavings should be okay (avoid cedar). They do tend to swell up when they get wet however. Ducklings will also try and taste them but keep an eye they don't actually ingest a lot (they usually don't but you'll want to watch them at first). The best combo would be some pine shavings topped with straw. They use it like a sandbox.
