How To Keep Chicks Warm During Winter?

Thread Starter

I am planning on having some chickens in my back yard, and have a lot of questions. One of them is, what do you all do in the winter or when it gets really cold outside? Do the chicks stay inside their coop with a heater? Or do you bring them inside for warmth?

Chicks or chickens?

If you are talking about chicks (up to 6 weeks of age), they need a heat source. After that they don't need heat.

Chickens have evolved from jungle fowl whose range was from jungle lowlands to the Himalayan foothills. Since then, all the breeds we have today were developed over the last couple hundred to 1,000 or more years in all corners of the globe. Likely the breeds you are considering were developed in climates colder than yours, long before there was a means to put a heater in a building. Chickens die from heat and bad air - not cold. Keep your coop windows wide open year round and you'll have healthy birds.

They put themselves to bed at nigh wearing a winter down coat - not pajamas.
