Soon to be chicken owner! Seeking advice

Thread Starter
Hi there. I just got a chicken coop and next week will be calling to have a county health inspector to come out and give me the go ahead. I am wanting four chickens and cannot decide if I should have 4 different breeds or get 4 of the same. I really love the look of wyanndotte chickens and the all white leghorn types. Any suggestions on what breeds are dual purpose and get along with others?

:welcome

I like the mix.   I like having the eye candy in the yard, and, some good egg layers.  Wyondottes are very pretty...will go broody.

I like a bantam out in the yard in the summer.

I love the leghorn for eggs..and any of the sex links..the red being my favorite.  :)

I also love having an EE out there for the blue/green eggs.

Chickens are kinda like candy bars.  Try different ones  then you'll discover what you like best.

Hi and welcome to BYC. Like the other members here, i would suggest getting a variety - that way you will learn what breeds suit you. Leghorns are a not dual purpose birds, and from what i understand, tend to be a bit flighty. I'd suggest checking out the Breeds section here to help you identify suitable breeds.

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre

http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center, and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Welcome to BYC :frow Glad you joined us! I think most of us here keep a mixed flock of different breeds. I always did. This article breaks down some of the breeds and how to pick which ones are right for you:

:welcome  We got all the same kind, and I kind of wish I would have gotten the variety instead.  Still like our chickens though.
