Say it ain't so! Are they all male?

I think I have the opposite going on here. I was hoping for a male and a female, but I think the two ducks I got (just under 2 months old) are both female since they can both make pretty loud quacks. if I'm right we're going to have to find them a boyfriend, hopefully the same breed as them, which I'm not looking forward to since it was a fuss enough last year trying to find someone within an hour or so of a drive away selling young orpington hens in small numbers (we only wanted one or two, we wound up with just one to add to our existing flock of young birds, mostly silkies).

mine are pretty much just young enough haven't had their voices finish changing completely so I'm still hoping maybe Big Duck, the larger one, is a drake (they're mostly making grunts, while the other clearly quacked loud when my dog startled them and sometimes when I put them down after snuggle time). but my dad and I have pretty much decided we want to keep both since we got them as pets and while Big Duck is getting a little more independent they still love attention in the form of petting her bill and neck plus my dad really likes that one, and Baby Duck is, well, my sweet little snuggle baby and I can't get rid of them either. heck, before they were a month old my dad and I already decided if they turned out to be two drakes we'd get them each a girl and if we had two hens we'd get a drake for them to share because we'd already bonded with them (and them with us) to the point we knew we couldn't give either up.

they're both pretty spoiled too. we kept them inside longer than we intended because of issues with Baby Duck's leg and they both got very spoiled while we were getting Baby Duck's leg to improve, to the point that to get them to sleep outside without making a fuss all night we've had to set up a tent near their pen and my dad and I take turns sleeping outside with them. I'm not sure how many people would want to deal with ducks that spoiled, no matter how sweet and affectionate they are.

Are you on a lake or pond, or maybe a pool? If so, when the females swim they keep their tails in the water, drakes keep them up out of the water.

Sorry about the slow reply. Spent every waking minute at work or expanding the duck run. They all turned out to be males. This week they have developed white rings around their necks and fully green heads. No tail curls yet, but I'm sure that will be very soon. I just got the name yesterday of the processor again and will call on Monday. Hoping that I don't have to feed them much longer!! Lol. Friends are horrified that I started calling them freezer ducks. :) (we are needing to dissociate from them as layers that we were keeping.)

In the meantime we had our escape artist get out and disappear. Every couple days she shows back up and spends the night. I'm sure she is sitting a nest (obviously not very well!) somewhere but we have 10 acres and the neighbor 20 and we have searched in vain. She will either come back on her own or be coyote food. Decided we can't stress about her poor life decisions any more

. I'm sure with her cruddy sitting she won't be bringing 'lings with her. Last year she sat 30 days and then just abandoned the nest.

In the meantime we had someone offer us the 10 mixed 'lings (they don't know but looks like a pekin dad and a KC mom to me in the pics) from a surprise hatch (mom is <1 year old and hatched every egg. Lol.).

So even though these all turned out to be drakes, we will have freezer ducks AND new layers. Thank you all for your help. When I call the processor I will let you all know what they say.

So I called the processor yesterday. She said any age is fine, but that they can't guarantee getting all the pin feathers. Also said "bring them right over today." Lol. Wasn't ready for that. Kids and I spent 1/2 hour trying to catch the 4 boogers. (Probably should have had one of us videotaping and could have made money on Americas funniest videos.) took them in at 15 weeks and she said they were perfect because the feathers were very easy.

Nice! Any idea what you had for market weight/dressed weight? I'm thinking about my first processor trip this summer and wondering if I want to do 12 wks or wait a bit longer..
