I´m planning on building a 6ft tall aviary for coturnix quails with 1/4 hardware cloth sides and I´m worried that a raccoon or something else can reach their claws through. Do coturnix sleep against the sides of the cage? Or if I put in some dog kennels will they sleep in those?

Someone on here put a night cam on their quail cage once, to see how they got killed, and found that the quail would actually walk up to the fence to check out the raccoon, so I'd definitely make sure to use a wire size a raccoon can't reach through. 1/4 inch sounds very small though, I strongly doubt a raccoon can do anything about that. But we don't have raccoons around here, so I haven't really payed attention when raccoon proofing came up on the forum :p

1/4" is overkill, 1/2" will do just fine. Not much but insects can get through, just make sure the wire is attached securely to the enclouser, raccoons can rip off the wire if not very secure.

Years ago I had two dozen coturnix killed in one night when a predator pulled their heads off through the cage wire! Their headless bodies were sticking out of the sides of the cage! After experiencing that id say there is no over kill. Quail can be pretty dumb when it comes to predators, and predators can be very smart when it comes to quail.
