Here are some very good threads to read to see how others have dealt with fly strike:
attacked by fox- now maggots in wound! ARGH! - Page 2
OMG that was so nasty. I had to submerge her back to release all the dried stuff and get a look. I am so thankful that my 13 year old son helped. When I put her in the water and covered the wounds the maggots started coming off. I tried to keep her in there for as long as I could. When I got her out, there were still maggots hiding in some of the deeper spots. I got some out with tweezers, but it was hard to tell what was flesh and what was a maggot ( I CAN NOT believe I'm even writing about this!) Anyway, I bought a can of saline spray and we really tried to clean deep on the parts that were the worst. Then I put antibiotic ointment on her. I scrambled some eggs and gave her those mixed with mealworms and antibiotics. She seems otherwise fine. She looks awful however. YUCK YUCK YUCK.
Thanks for all of the help. People think I'm insane for having chickens - if they only knew!!
Sounds like she might make it with you taking care of her.
I'm glad the maggots are gone. Be sure and clean out the wound until it looks less goopy, Vetericyn wound spray is very good to use on open wounds twice a day. Although pricey at feed stores, it can be easier to apply that antibiotic ointments. Keep up the good work, and let us know how she is doing.
