I have been trying to buy a lavender orpington hen recently. I got a call from Papa's poultry today and he is going to send me a four-month-old hen. I asked him with the weather being so warm if that was a good idea. He said that he ships them like that up until about the end of June. Here in Tennessee it is 92 today and so humid the air is like a blanket. He said three day shipment. He said he puts fruit in their box and they usually make it fine. Do you think that chicken will survive this or would it significantly weaken it? I am supposed to pay him today.
 
Three days in up to 90's temperatures, I wouldn't do it personally. If the trip doesn't kill it, it will be drastically weakened and won't likely recover. Is there any chance for overnight shipment??
 
He said they wouldn't guarantee it. They might say they would overnight it but you couldn't count on it. He just texted me and wants to get the hen ready to go. I really want that hen so bad. He is in California and I am in Tennessee. It would devastate me to receive a dead chicken and know I caused it
 
Ohhh... i personally would NOT. NOT. NOT do that! I have 2 lavender orpingtons and they are such pretty and sweet birds... how devastated would you be if she got there very weakened or... dead? :( do you have a place nearby that you could buy from?
 
This is a hatchery that had gotten good reviews, but I am going to go with the advice here. I just texted him and told him I just couldn't do it, as badly as I wanted that hen. I had been looking for a month. The only hatchery even remotely close to me doesn't have good stock from what I have read. I had already named the lavender orp....Iris. I have bought 3 orpingtons at online hatcheries without anyproblems but it was much earlier in the spring
 
So, he won't guarantee that you'll get a live bird, I'm guessing it's not a cheap bird, and think about what the poor chicken would be going through for those 3 days in 90* + temps without water. I absolutely would not do this.

ETA - You posted seconds before I did. Good for you. Tough decision, but maybe you can get one early next spring?
