Chicken Breed Focus - Serama

We have 8 Serama, three 6 week olds and five 7 week olds. I hatched them from eggs I got from 2 different breeders.

We have 3 cockerels and 5 pullets. 2 of the 3 cockerels were in the 3 egg hatch. I love how early, and easy, they are to sex. It was very easy to tell within the first few weeks, and there were a couple we knew from day one. Refreshing after Silkies!

Our favorite is Thor (7weeks old), he’s been quick to develop from the start. This past weekend he decided to take up crowing. Or attempts to crow, rather. He isn’t very good at it yet. Here he is competing with one of our older chickens. Our Showgirl, who should also give up at crowing, omg so bad at it lol.

Anyway, fun little birds. I have more in the incubator to hatch Labor Day weekend.
Now that is adorable. The first time our cockerel crowed, he was in our living room. I got so excited you would have thought I just watched my son's first steps. :D

I love their first little crow attempts.
This little one actually gets out all 5 syllables.

Ever have hens fight? These 2 are normally good buddies and were even sitting on eggs together, but I think they were both trying to claim the chicks that hatched. Notice how one of the boys tries to get between them.

The videos are awesome! Ours are young still, so mostly just chest bumping between the males occasionally.

That crowing is freaking cute!

That fight was hella cute too!
"Ladies, ladies. There's no need to fight."
"Get out of the way Brutus! I'mma taking her out!"

I tried to get pics, but of course they wouldn’t pose away from their little pack. I brought 4 or 5 over at a time, but they still did the lost chick squawking thing. Here are 6 of our 8.

Today’s mail brought a new traditional Serama pair. First time I’ve ever had birds shipped to me. All went well, and they are settling in nicely. The little pullet’s tail is
pretty ratty, but they otherwise seem to be in good physical condition. The cockerel was pretty flighty. He is calming down and didn’t freak out last time I picked him up. Both quietly sat on my lap for a while tonight. They are 6-7 months old.
