Question about sand

I'm not sure, but I believe that has silica in it, which is harmful to chickens.

Try a garden center, they may have what's called river sand.
 
I also read a lot about this, and people have all kinds of different opinions. I just couldn't find washed construction sand available anywhere near me (plus I have a very small setup so it wouldn't make sense for me to have a truckload delivered, which I think is how you can get that kind of sand usually), so I have ended up using play sand. You can get bagged play sand without silica, which I think is the ingredient people don't like in play sand. Anyway, that is what I have been using for the past couple of years, because it seemed like the best option that is available to me, and I did find a fair number of other people who also use it. But I know everyone has different situations regarding what they prefer, what their concerns are, and what is easily available to them, and I have also read that washed construction sand is a very good option for those who can get it (I think the Chicken Chick recommends it).
 
We have play sand in the coop and the brand you noted from HD in the run (not really planned but it worked out that way), with the small quantity needed. I did a lot of research too and it's interesting, you'll find a whole range of opinions. Some people say no play sand, some say only play sand, and same on construction sand! I do like the larger particles in the construction sand. Just double check the brand/bag to be sure there's no mortar in it.

Yes no mortar or you will come home on a rainy day and find chickens stuck in place, what a sight that would be.

I think I googled "play sand silica free" or something to see what brands came up and looked for one of those at HD.

I think you can look on the bag and it will tell you if it is silica free. We've ordered washed construction sand from a local garden center and it was silica free.
