Needing some advice! My 4 day old chick developed a right sided splayed leg, I was out of town and my husband hobbled the leg with a rubber band/straw and the chick was able to stand and get around for food and water. Things seemed to be moving in the right direction (we kept the hobble on for 5 days), but each attempt to remove the hobble has left the leg really cocked out to the side. I have tried to make a tighter hobble with vet wrap(coban) to try to get the leg more under her but the leg is still turned out to the side. The chick is still getting around fine and I am not concerned that she isn't thriving but I am afraid we didn't act quick enough to correct the spraddled leg? Also, can she live with this funky leg in a backyard setting or is this something I HAVE to fix?

I've seen one-legged chickens do well as adults, so no worries there. I've seen this occur with chicks who are over-crowded, or do not have the strength to stand, and so trampling by other chicks occurs. Definitely separate the chick and do what you can. Some rehab, such as what you are doing with straws and bands, will only help. It may never be the same, but I don't expect your chick to die from this.

Good luck!
