Very sick duck..... :(

My little female Welsh harlequin duck has just suddenly fell ill, I'm not sure what's wrong with her... The other day i noticed she was looking a bit slow and not like herself... so i picked her up to take a look at her, and she was sooo light.... i put her on penicillin, next day i found her stuck in their pond, as she was so weak she could hardly walk... I have her shut away now, on penicillin, giving her lots of earthworms as she still loves them, and she's eating a bit of 16% layer ration, and vinager water. She was in a large run, with 4 other ducks, I have been feeding them, 16% layer ration, mixed with chopped grains, milk, and a bit of alfalfa powder sometimes... One thing that has changed in i've started feeding them, free choice oyster shell, of which they have been getting through lots of it... Do you think she could have eaten to much oyster shell?? She has very dark manure, and she also has like gloopy clear discharge kinda stuff (kinda like mucus ), that often comes out of her rear as well.........

I'm stuck with what to do with her

the penicillin doesn't seem to be helping her, I've been giving her about 0.4ml once a day...

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Coccidiosis! Wash hands and make sure you separate this duck from any other animal! The stool from this duck is contagious!

Coccidiosis is a protozoa that attacks the intestines of an animal. It is carried from the feces and water sources where infected animals reside. Ducks are number 1 carrier of this living parasite. The only way to cure is to go to your local feedstore and ask for Amprolium. It's a medicine that comes in many forms, (powder, liquid) and a name brand would be something called Corid.

Start feeding Purina chick starter, as it has amprolium in it as well (it's perfectly safe for ducks, amprolium is NOT a sulfide, and is safe for many different animals).

Coccidiosis should not be taken lightly, as it can be transferred to dogs, cats, swine, cattle, and yes, PEOPLE.

oh dear.....do you think there's much chance of her pulling through? There's no blood in her stool though.....? or doesn't there have to be?

If it's dark and snotty looking, then it's probably in early stages. If you wait around for the little parasites to eat the inner lining of the bowel, then you will see blood in the stool. Snot like substances are most likely from the body trying to fend of the parasite. There's a good chance of survival, but you must be active about it, and it takes about 2 weeks to a month to clear up.

And taking into account of the weather conditions for the US this year, it's been extremely mild, and perfect breeding temperatures for those little buggers!

Ok Well today I've contacted about all the local feed stores and vets in the area, and nearby district..... Nobody seems to have any amprolium / corrid....

I'm waiting to see if my local vet can order it in, if she can it'll probably be in, in about 1 - 2 weeks. The only feed store with the medicated chick starter only has one bag left, and they are not to local, but i maybe able to get someone to pick it up for me... as i normally buy non-medicated feed from our local feed store. The one vet (not to local, about 3 hours away) said he has Coccidiosis tablets (Toltrazuril) for calves... do you think they contain sulfur though?.................

I'm actually in Canada, BC... it's been pretty dry here, but i guess they do have a pond, and lately we've had a bit of rain...

Probably a good idea to have a vet look at her. Toltrazuri would work, and no, it does not contain sulfur.

Coccidiosis is not as common in ducks as it is in other poultry and gamefowl, but it's a possibility, and there's no harm in treating with something like amprolium (Amprol, Corid, AmproMed, etc) or Toltrazuril (Baycox). It's also species specific, so the is no danger of spreading it to other species of animals.

Coccidiosis is species specific, so no risk of infecting anything other than ducks.

This morning i think it looks like my little duck is actually looking a bit better! I separated her the other day, and have been giving her vinegar and a little garlic / honey, all in her water, she's been drinking quite a bit of it (she's still on penicillin) She's been eating some, and is looking steadier on her feet today, and more bright, do you think i should still look into medications, or just carry on what i'm doing, as it seems to be helping... :)

If she's getting better it's probably because she has some sort of bacterial infection that is responding to the penicillin. Probably worth getting yourself a supply of amprolium just in case.
