Dogs will work, but be aware that they can be a very long-term investment of time, energy, and money...if taken care of twelve to fifteen years is an easily achieved lifetime for one...and that care doesn't come cheaply. Also, not all dogs will co-habit with chickens...research the breeds carefully. It is definitely doable, but I would try to solve this predator issue without involving a dog. Once the problem is handled and the chickens secure *then* I would pursue the idea of a guard dog. I would definitely want a secure coop/run for the chickens before I put a dog in with them...that would make life much less stressful.
