Hey guys!

I convinced my family we should get some chickens, we are allowed up to four hens on the property. I started building my coop yesterday using pallet wood and some scrap ends from my local home depot. Thus far this build has cost me nothing!

I have some questions:

1) I live in canada but we have very mild winters where I am, we are lucky if we get a few cm of snow a year. I was planning on insulating the roof and nothing else. Thoughts? The breeds of chickens I will be getting are all cold hardy.

2) if you look at the pics I have left some gaps at the top and was planning on using those as vents; too much? Too little? Just right?!

3) to make cleaning easier and to make sure the coop doesn't absorb moisture I would like to cover the floor and walls with something, I was thinking corrugated plastic sheeting or vinyl sheeting?

I think that's it for now, thanks in advance!

1. sounds fine. some people don't insulate the roof but I prefer it to prevent condensation and to muffle to sound of heavy rainfall

2. no pics showing

3. try scrubable gloss paint. once you get tears and loose ends on the plastic or vinyl crud starts collecting in the crevices. That is a problem that I have with the vinyl sheeting I stapled to my floor. I brought it a few inches up the wall and think I would have been better off cutting it very flush to the wall and then caulking or something.

Because it's a small coop, my concern with the ventilation is...will it be above the heads of roosting birds...are those openings around 18 inches or more above the roost level - or what will be the roost level? You don't want cold wind blowing on roosting birds.

I would advise facing the vent openings away from the prevailing winter winds...

You can't really have too much ventilation, because you can easily close off too much by covering it with something. But not having enough ventilation is much harder to address. Where the ventilation is located can be key...

Your coop is really looking good so far - great use of materials!
