Advise please! First time hatch

Hi! First time posting, read MANY helpful tips off of here already though! Thank you all for your words of advise that have helped thus far.

I am doing my first hatch and need some advise on one of my Littles. This egg pipped last night about 11 and I peeled the shell back just a little to make sure everything was moist enough and this is what it looks like. Does it need help and if so, what do you suggest?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to BYC :frow That pippie looks great! I'd leave it as it is now and give it time to finish the hatching process, which could take up to 18 hours from external pip to zipping, which is when they "unzip" the shell to complete the hatch. Just make sure the humidity in the incubator stays around 65% or more now. Good luck and keep us posted!

It's SO stressful! It's my first time and I just don't know what is normal yet! I just posted a new thread, I'm not sure about another one of the eggs. It's been like this for about 12 hours now. I can see its beak, and see that it's breathing. Should I assist?

Hello and welcome to BYC - glad that you have joined us.

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre

http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center, and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

The "incubating and hatching eggs" would be a good place to post questions at this time.

Good luck

I got 9 little lavender orps out of 12 eggs in a little giant incubator! Not bad for a first timer! smile.png

We lost one of the nine, I blame my lack of sleep and inexperience. I had read on another post that they put containers of water with sponges in them to wick the water up to rise the humidity in the incubator. So I put a small bowl in there. As soon as the little bugger hatched I walked away for a bathroom break and he/she fell in the bowl. It was too late by the time I got back. Lesson learned, ONLY putting the sponge in next time and using my 1/4 inch tube and water bottle to wet the sponge.

So I have 8 lively happy lav orps running around the brooder as I type.

Thanks to everyone that takes the time to post tips on here, they are priceless to have when starting out.
