Is this a Rooster or Hen Buff Orpington???

Hi

We purchased 8 baby chicks in early March and 2 of them were Buff Orpingtons. They were our only non sexed breed we purchased and one we sexed early on based off wing feather pattern, tail feathers coming in later than the hens, and his comb and wattle was much much bigger than the other buff or the other girls we had early on. We rehomed him as we can't have roosters where we live. Well now my Buff Orpington that is left here just crowed this morning!!! It was a normal crow and wasn't as loud as a normal crow either. I'm not sure what to think. I've heard that buff Orpington hens can crow. These ladies are around 14 weeks old. Can you tell me what you think?

So are these saddle feathers then?? How come the other cockerel was so quick to develop and we knew right away he was a boy but this one had all the signs he was a girl, besides his comb and wattle getting bigger lately??

Could you get a better side view picture? If it was early March then it is about 12 weeks old correct? That comb is awfully big, but the second picture you posted of the tail isn't very rooish (and looks slightly different from the first one).

I'll try posting a picture tomorrow or Wednesday. Our 10 year old daughter just got admitted to the hospital for appendicitis.

It, unfortunately for you, is a quite cockerel. I have Roosters of the Buff Orpington Breed and the combs and Tail feather match theirs in shape and size back when they were Cockerals. Another thing I can tell you is that it is quiet a good looking Roo. Kinda looks like a younger version of my show Roo.

Prayers for your daughter, dacrocker77!

And your BO roo is just gorgeous! I am sure someone in your area would love to have him since you cannot keep roosters on your property.

God bless, CluckerCottage.
