Safe treats to train baby chicks on? - Page 2

My currently 6 week old chicks are not interested in any treats! But they love eating their chick food out of my hand and seem to think that's special. My 3 year olds were given scrambled eggs, a few ground oats and dandelion leaves as chicks. And each time they got a treat i would say "come get some candy". Now when they are out free ranging all I have to do is yell "come get candy" and they come running lol. It's very handy if I need to do a quick head count or want to get them into their pen if I'm leaving...or any threat of a predator. They have also trained all additions to the flock in the past 3 years to get to the coop fast when they hear that. Was totally by accident but it sure has worked great!

I started giving mine treats at about the two week mark (mainly for training them).  They had access to grit and the treats were a VERY small portion of their diet.  Mostly finely chopped grapes, chopped tomato, and yogurt.  They'd see my hand in the brooder and hear me saying "chick chick chick" and they all came running (and learned that the hand was a good thing not to be feared).  Made it much easier to wrangle them back up when I started letting them outside for brief periods at the 2-3 week mark.  I think the key here again is to give them treats in very small amounts (and with access to grit).

I was actually thinking about this today, that I should probably train them with some type of command to come to me... so glad I found this thread! They do seem to come to me in the brooder even without any treats, so I'm hopeful it will go good.

Definitely live mealworms! Check out my babies fighting over them!

I assume they would be ok for 3 week olds? They have had worms and little spiders, lol.

Yep, just give them a little grit and make sure they are getting their usual chick starter in addition to the treats!
