Hi I'm a new chick is mama. I just got 6 chicks on Memorial Day. 3 were 2 weeks old hen layers (Plymouth Rock, buff Orpington and brown leghorn) and 3 were 2 day old silkies. I am enjoying watching them grow. My 2 week old leghorn had an apparent seemed to be paralyzed leg. It kept flipping over and she was walking on what appeared to be the "wrist" it was so sad but I started to try a little Pat on it and stretch her leg a little bit each day and she is starting to walk on the whole leg. Anyway I have lots of questions but will try and look on site first. I'm wondering if my now 3.5 week olds are old enough to go outside a little during the day? My "spiced six Pak" are named. Cajun, curry, Rosemary, sage , pepper and peppermint patty.... Praying peppermint patty continues to get full use of her leg

Usually young chicks are ready to spend some time outside once they are fully feathered out. If your weather has been warm - they can have short spells to get used to it. The silkies are way too young.

Glad you could join the flock! Congrats on your new chicks clap.gif
Here is a nice article on raising chicks ~ http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-raise-baby-chicks-the-first-60-days-of-raising-baby-chickens

Supervised visits out doors are fine for a little while. A mother hen would take them out as soon as they hatch. Shorts trips would be needed as they can't scurry under a hen if you are brooding them.

Good luck and enjoy BYC frow.gif

Thanks guys I'm still trying to navigate around the site. I didn't take my 3 1/2 weeks out for a little play in their pen area the other day and they seem to love it. But I'm still having one problem one of my 3 1/2 week old chicks has got some messed up leg it's almost like their week sometime she's walking on I'm fine and sometime she rolls them under. I looked up splayed feet and it didn't appear to be that. Up until the other day the other two hands seem to be very nice with her now all the sudden one of the hens is packing out her so bad she made her bleed a little on her back so I am mediately removed her but I must say she's very upset she wants to still be with those other chickens. I've been spending a lot of time with her and I think now she thinks I'm her mother and she wants to be with me very content just sitting in my lap. I have been putting her in with little one week old silkies at night and they seem to be very good with her. So far anyway. My question is anybody have any ideas about why her legs sometimes work and sometimes don't?
