My blue swede is in trouble :(

Hi, I'm new to the forums but I need some advice.

In the early evening while I was at work, my mother let my 5 ducks out to walk. I came home from to find Marta, my blue swedish duck, on her back and feebly waving one of her feet. I immediately went to right her and she couldn't stand on her own. She was stumbling and tipping forward and her constantly swayed in a rocking motion. I picked her up and took her inside and mom and I started searching the internet for help, which it hard to find.

Mom let them out around 5pm to walk and said they seemed fine and wandered out their usual way. I got home at 8 to find her like that. I have her now in the bathtub with towels and we gave her pedialyte with activated charcoal and probiotics mixed in with a syringe and she will nibble at the syringe once she realizes it's in her beak. It's almost like she's drunk, she stands and her head sways in circles, she doesn't seem to know where she is and sometimes she shakes her tail. I'm fairly sure it's a toxin of some sort. We had a lot of rain yesterday due to tropical storm Colin and everything is wet. The other 4 are fine as far as I can tell.

Has anyone experienced something similar and what did you do?

I have 5 ducks total: 2 black indian runners, Virgil and Hattie and 3 Blue Swedish; Marta, Sven, and Sigrid. the runners are just over 1 year old and the swedes I got as babies at the end of Feb.

I think I would come to the same conclusion - sounds like botulism.  At the same time, another possibility, though not as likely, perhaps, is that she was injured somehow.

There is a sticky with recipes for flushes - I would put activated charcoal in her drinking water, too - is she drinking?

I am happy to report she made a recovery. I checked on her this morning and she bobbed her head at me and made quacky sounds :)

Botulism is what I first suspected but she didn't have full paralysis. she wasn't floppy just wobbly. We did do activated charcoal mixed into her water. We took unflavored pedialyte, probiotics, and activated charcoal, mixed it together, then sucked it into a syringe. We wonder if maybe she was just in pain, like she had swallowed something and it got stuck. When I gave her the syringe of water I massaged her front, right under her neck and she would straighten herself up. After a few hours the swaying eased and she stand and twitch her wings.

This morning she was eager to get back out there and she was walking normal and drinking water so I have no idea what it truly was. I plan on overhauling their pens. I'm going to shift them to a new location. We may even get them a little shed. The ducks will be living in a nicer place than us eventually!
