Chicken Breed Focus - Yokohama

All the specimens in the photos here are very nice, but often you will see examples that look very poorly. Inbreeding is a big problem for this breed in America.

I've bred Phoenix before. If Yokohamas are anything like them, they are a challenge. They lay very few eggs, and they hatch much better under a hen than in an incubator. But definitely worth the challenge!

Thanks for the article!
Definitely a challenge with the low egg count, but even poorly marked they please me. Got my birds from different hatcheries trying to get a wide enough gene pool for health, but wish I could find someone who's bred them a while. Haven't found any locally.

I almost when with Yokohamas but ended up going with Phoenixs. Maybe some time in the future I'll get a trio. I love the red and white coloring, just dont like yellow legs.

My eyes get stuck on the feathers and forget to look at their feet. 😂 I definitely have to look at the feet tomorrow!

Phoenix are beautiful too.

I don't mean they are poorly marked. I mean they're poorly because they don't thrive, often, if they are inbred. Not easy to get really healthy, vigorous specimens. There must be good raisers of this breed somewhere, but I haven't found them.

I was referring to my thoughts on my own birds 😂. Not the best specimens but well loved anyhow.
Agree they have health issues though. I read an article theorizing that at least part of the problem are the genes that create their pattern. No idea if that's been proved out or not though. Wish I knew enough to really do something to improve them.

That can certainly happen, but the pure white ones can have the same problems, as can any breed where there isn't a large gene pool. Sometimes Yokohamas are outcrossed to Sumatras to try to improve the problem, but then you have to breed back to the standard. There really is no easy solution until we get some unrelated imports.

How warm should they be kept in the winter? I am going to try raising and breeding Yokohamas this year for the first time. I understand they are not cold tolerant but how warm should I keep them in the winter? I live in Utah and we get snow and freezing temps.
