How many people here raise their chickens as pets?

Mine are pets. We love all their personalities, but sometimes I am tired of the rooster. I actually have taken a break for a while because so many suggestions or advice is to just "cull". I don't think I need a "safe space" but I got tired of strangers telling me to kill them.

Ours are spoiled pets who provide us with eggs! :)
I have to agree....this is how it is turning out for us as well. I thought I could go into it with a neutral attitude. Now, if any one or any thing harms my chickies, they better not cross my path! I truly enjoy my chickies

I hear you! I did what I thought was best for me and my roo's and they are living happily in their bachelor pad. I had to try to see if it would work for myself. So far, my 12 roo's are living happily ever after. I won't pretend to know your particular situation but maybe there is a solution you can feel comfortable with. Follow your instincts....

I'm curious on this because I'm a vegetarian not vegan.. I love chickens I always have my whole life. I love the egg factor. But just feel the most passionate about the animal. Growing up around poultry farmers I feel like the odd ball lol. Are their others that feel this way or is it just me?

We are all vegans and raise our chickens solely as pets.

That said, we have consumed their eggs, but we do not eat eggs from any other sources. If our girls aren't laying, we go without eggs. Period.

I know how my girls are treated and so I feel an exception to our veganism is warranted, yet, I also understand the hypocrisy of being an ethical vegan and still consuming eggs from my chickens -- it presumes a believe that the eggs are "mine" to take. And because my chickens can't TELL me it's okay, I am essentially stealing from them. I like to believe they're okay with it, and as we don't have a rooster, the eggs aren't "potential chickens" and would possibly go to waste if they weren't consumed. Still.

I'd never kill a chicken, and neither would my children or husband. Chickens, like our dog and cats, are individuals with a right to life, and we'd never eat any of them. They have been entrusted to us as their caretakers; we don't have the right to take their life just because we feel like filling our mouths and bellies with that specific taste. Plants provide absolutely all of the necessary nutrients we need.
