Please help! Chicken wound from dog :(

My gut is the wounds look worst then they are. No active bleeding and birds are moving well. My broody hen; injury is to the back of neck. Raw and exposed but not bleeding and she is moving well. #2 has about 3 quarter sized spots and is definitely banged up and in sock and has not left #1 side all day. A couple others have minor injuries and have hid in nesting box all day. Just treated them all to straight Mealy worm treat (yes I still feel guilty)! and will try yo get the the more seriously hurt ones in the dog crate. I just feel like I should at least clean wounds and try yo get some noesporin on them.

Make sure that any anti-biotic you use does NOT have an added painkiller or you could over dose the birds. Cleaning the wounds is important and any red/raw areas need to be covered or the bird has to be separated because the others will peck at the wounds and make it worse. Best Wishes.

So I got the 2 most injured ones in a create in the house for the night (others are secured in coop). I honestly can't deal with traumatizing them anymore tonight so will re-evaluate and tend to wounds tomorrow. Really looks like surface wounds but worried about infection. Very stressful day as I had chickens everywhere (from hiding/foraging in woods to hiding in the nesting box) major task was getting them all in a safe place! 2 missing birds still are gone so honestly believe something attacked them and my dog who was involved reacted and joined in on the chaos. I can't believe she was responsible for all the carnage due to the missing birds. She managed to push in the gate but I found her in there so she could not have made the 2 birds disappear! I'm still so debastated!!!

Dogs are the #1 cause of injured and slain backyard chickens unfortunatley. I know it has been a tough time for you. Best you can do is keep a close eye on the injured and consider what you need to prevent this from happening again. Observation is key to spotting infections. Best wishes.

If you have a local farm store or fleet farm...grab some Blu kote for the injuries, it's turns them purple (so other hens don't peck at the raw skin) and is also antibiotic I believe. Clean with iodine (they should have something there similar to that, forget the name but ask and they'll lead you to it) then spray Blu kote on. Best wishes to you and your flock!
