July 4th hatch-a-long

Here is one of the 3 silkies that hatched. I'm still disappointed in losing all my Ayam chicks, but this one silkie has been the best. So friendly and cute as a button!

Yeah, all I can assume is they must have been to scrambled from the post office. I had 8 of 9 that were fertile and only one made it to lockdown but died in shell. The silkies were in there as a base test to make sure my incubator wasn't a factor. Had 3 of 5 silkies hatch so I'm blaming the post man...oh well, prob best. I'm not set up to breed and probably have too many chickens already, but an Ayam would have been cool as hell ;-)

They really are great chickens! So pretty and they have fun personalities. I have to lock down a batch of my own when I get home.

Well good luck! I may try to buy a chick next year but I guess I'll drool from afar for a while ;) if I do I'm going to buy a live one so I can eliminate the shaken egg issue.

Too bad you're not near me, I have a couple chicks I'm looking to sell and I'm not having a ton of luck locally.

I wish! I'm going to Michigan in a few weeks, but Vermont will need to wait until next summer when we go up to Maine. (There were some great breweries last time I was there :)

End of day 22 and I got 16 chicks happily chirping away. There's still 16 more eggs in the incubator that got no pip. Might give them a few more days to make sure but the air cells are all clear in them. In happy with a 50 % hatch for a first try. Have to check them out to see what I can do better next time.

One chick out yesterday afternoon 4 out by this morning but then she got up and the other two are dead.
It looks like she has tried to get them out of the shells herself. One baby was dragged out of its shell and the other was curled up in the egg sack but she had stripped all the hard shell. Sadly though too late and those have passed away. It is odd that she should do that because normally they don;t try to help do they?

This is the only pic I have so far but the other three are doing wella dn making loads of noise!
