multiple symptoms in this hen

Hi,

I have a 4 or 5 year old hen with what looks like multiple things going on causing her to feel unwell

symptoms

labored breathing

lying down

limping

very red skin in many areas

fallen comb

The whole flock has mites so we treated everyone for that. She did not have any actual mites but appears to have had them with this red skin she has.

No bumblefoot, it's not Mericks so far as I can tell, though she is a bit wobbly.

She's been acting this way for 5 days. She is eating, drinking, laying in a nesting box. She is not molting.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

I would first check inside her vent an inch or two for a stuck egg. It may be something else entirely, but internal laying, egg yolk peritonitis, cancer, or ascites (fluid in the lower belly) can cause some of her symptoms. Usually they will lose weight in the breast, but can be puffy or tight in the lower abdomen from fluid or infection. Here are some articles to read:

Thank you. She does not have an egg inside of her. She does not have a swollen abdomen. We are really perplexed.

thanks for the articles and let me know if you have any other thoughts. She is hanging in there, doesn't seem to be uncomfortable actually but she's not moving around much.

thank you for anything else you might have to offer

take care

Kate
