Hey y'all! I'm very new to this whole chicken raisin' thing...in fact it happened by the will of God I suppose. My hubby & I have talked for years about wanting to raise chickens, but never did much about it. We didn't feel the timing was ever right. We recently moved to a new property, so I guess God felt as though now was when we should give it a try. The night before my birthday (June 13th), my mother-in-law & I were driving home pretty late from Wally world (aka Wal-mart) and there was a chicken on the side of the road. It was 10:30 pm & we knew she should've been roosting by then, plus this was not the "chicken district" part of town. So, we figured she was lost and took her home. I felt as though this was my birthday gift from God. We figure she must've fallen off a chicken truck (Pilgrim's Chickens uses our road for their route).
So, I have lots of questions! I have read lots if great advice so far in this forum...Thank God for the internet! Please send me advice and ask all the questions you can think of to find out more about how to help our "Lucky Lady."
Through reading this forum I do know she is a Leghorn pullet. She is currently roosting in our shed and roams free during the day. Without having been prepared for her, she is eating infant rice cereal for breakfast, and snacks on chopped carrots, green beans, watermelon, strawberries, bagels, English muffins, & all the bugs she can find. She doesn't scratch around much, though. I feel its because she has been raised thus far in an industrial chicken house.
Thank you for being here to share my concerns.

Hi CluckJunkie and welcome to the BYC family! I definitely would look into getting/building a covered chicken run so that your chicken can be protected from predators when you are not outside and around when your chicken is outside and around. I've found that being out with your chicken or the runs are the best methods against predators and there will be times when you can't be out with your chicken - you know, sleep, bathroom.....

Hi Harley! Thanks for the advice. I have found myself cluck-sitting this chicken more than I hand anticipated. She is the sweetest thing! I had no idea she would follow me around like a puppy & come when I call her. Lol! I definitely need an area I feel she will be protected when I can't be there.

Hi Justin!
Thank you so much for all the links! I had no idea there was such a helpful community of "fowl friends" to guide me in my new adventure. God always provides my needs!

@CluckJunkie It is wonderful this community, because it is like a tree of life. If I help you you can help someone else, and so on. Then maybe one day I will have a question and you will be able to answer it, so the purpose of BYC is to create a warm and friendly environment which is why I try to encourage new people to intrigue them because without new people our forum would be boring it is the new people that bring in new experts. Out with the old and in with the new! Except on BYC we have awesome old members that arent going anywhere!

Maybe a couple friends for her would be nice too, they can roost together, keep company, keep warmth, etc. It's like potato chips and cats, you can never have just one!
