Sexing OEGB

Generally with bantams you can tell the boys by 6 weeks old, sometimes as young as 3 weeks old, by their growing wattles and larger, reddening combs. We love our OEGBs - they are such characters.

I received these Black Velvet OEGBs from another BYCers. One has a larger and redder comb than the other. Can you tell at this age (approx 4 weeks old) if they are male and female?

At this stage they look to be a pair. By 6 weeks old you should know for sure. Girls don't start growing their combs and wattles until around 12 weeks old. Bantam roosters can start crowing at 6 weeks old (just so you know). They look very beautiful.

Thanks! We really love them! If we wanted to breed them, would they be ok in with the main flock of mixed heritage breeds and bantams or should they be kept seperate. Also, how desirable is this breed? We are new to them.

I can't advise you on how desirable they are as I'm in a completely different country. We have 4 OEGB girls and all I can say is I'd love more. They are darling little birds. For breeding you'd be best to keep them separate but you'll need a few more hens. It will depend on your rooster as to how many hens he needs. Some are fine with a few but some need 8 or more. I think 10 is the maximum for good fertility. It all depends on how he treats them.
