Metal roof on the coop

Hello all! I'm new here and new with raising chickens too! We are excited about this. I started to build a chicken coop out of pallet wood and we want to install a metal roof. I have 1/2 plywood on already. Can I just put the metal roof on top of the plywood? Thanks in advanced!!

Yes you can but it is recommended to use tar paper under the metal roof. It will ensure a long life for the plywood base. Be sure to use the screws that have a built in washer to keep the water out. They are sold in the roofing areas of most stores like Home Depot and Lowes.
I did it here on this coop recently myself. The main coop does not have plywood under it and I wish it did.

You could probably get away with it, but I wouldn't.

I would screw down 1x4's to the roof trusses and then screw the metal roof to the 1x4's. Plywood alone would not have enough holding power for me and our winds up here.

Good point about the winds.

I should have mentioned that the screws that are special for metal roofing also come in different lengths. I made sure I got the long ones deep into the roof trusses.
 
You certainly can install the roof over battens attached to the decking/rafters but it's also acceptable to screw directly to the decking. That's how mine is installed. You will need 30 lb. felt on the decking before installing the battens or the roofing panels.

Excerpts from the guide...

"In residential applications, Southeastern Metals’ recommends the use of minimum 15/32 plywood or 7/16 OSB decking. In addition, we specify a 30# felt be installed in accordance with local building code requirements to control condensation."

"Metal roofing can also be separated from the moisture barrier by optional 1” x 3” battens as furring, spaced a maximum of 16” on center and fastened according to our recommended application details."

Wow, I can't believe the support I'm getting from you guys!! Thank you very much! About the high winds, you're right @21hens-incharge, I do have 1/2 osb tied down with decking screws. So if I get long enough metal screws that goes thru the plywood and into the rafters then it should be strong enough that even a crane can hit it and it won't move. Home Depot sells this synthetic roll underlayment that seems very nice but it's super expensive. I'm just going to do it with 30# felt. You guys rock!

It is always better to ask then guess is my motto. If you have other questions I am sure the many experienced craftspersons and chickeneers will be glad to help find answers too. I am off more then on lately as summer is super busy.
