Hey everyone I have a question I hope someone can help! Last night something got into our coop and killed almost all of the birds that couldn't roost up high yet, it ate the guts out of our mama hen, ate her new chick, carried off one of our young ducks and just ate the legs off of another young duck and two older chicks. Does anyone know what kind of animal would just eat the legs off and leave them there? We're trying to figure out what we're dealing with and any input/advice is very much appreciated!

Thank you! I looked on there but it didn't say anything about which animal would be just biting their legs off but I'm thinking a fox or a coon. We're going to set a trap tonight and see how it goes

It was a raccoon he set the trap off and wasn't able to get in that was so I'm pretty sure he climbed the fence and got in and he ended up getting our rooster and injuring one of the hens but my husband got home just in time and got him before he could escape

I feel that you are dealing with both a possum and a raccoon. Evisceration is the definite MO of a possum. You likely have multiple predators praying on you flock.

Ugh, hate reading predator threads. Ours have only been in their coop a few days now, and I'm still too scared to go check them in the morning, I make DH do it. (He swears it's well shored up, but still.....)

Coops and runs can't be too secure! Plan for weasels, rats, maybe snakes. Raccoons with clever little hands, and 100 lb. hungry dogs. Bears? Digging under, climbing or flying in. Chicken is on everyone's menu! Mary
