2 things actually, roosters foot got caught in fencing yesterday for probably an hour, we got him out but today he isn't putting any weight on it. Hes acting normal otherwise and its not swollen. I assume I should give it a few days.
But the other issue is, he has the biggest talens I have ever seen, they have to be at least 6 inches long and they are out the side of his foot and curl. The problem is the one is now starting to curl into his top of the leg and we noticed its actually hard for him to walk now since they are getting tangled up in each other. I have watched videos about removing them with pliers, which I am nervous about but think my daughter and I can do it. Question, there really isn't an option separating him from the 6 hens I have, will they bother the the piece that is left when I remove the nail? Also, should I wait and make sure his foot is ok before I do this as not to stress him even more? Can someone reassure me on the removal! I almost died when I saw how they do it. I am capable but nervous none the less.
Thank you!

If you are talking about spurs we actually cut ours like dog nails using a heavy duty dog nail clippers, have some kwik stop handy in case they bleed. His hurt leg should get better over time. You shouldn't need to remove him unless you notice anyone bothering it too much.

yes i mean the spurs! These are huge, 6 to 7 inches long and the width of a dime!
I am thinking of removing them instead of trimming them, just little nervous

Put pliers up close to leg and twist.you donot have to squeeze hard with the pliers. They come off rather easily. Take them off with your fingers they are going to bleed for a little while but dont worry it will stop hopee this helps

ok, I am going to do it this week!
wanna let his foot heal a little first
Thank you

A short piece of hacksaw blade (say 6" long) works really well to trim a roosters spurs. A hunk of bees wax rubbed on the teeth of the saw blade will seal the blood vessels in the quick or if you leave about 3/4 to one inch of spur there shouldn't be any bleeding. I think that it is cruel to break or twist off a rooster's spurs using pliers.

Clean the area verry well then cook a couple potatoes in the microwave big enough for the Spurs when their realy hot stick the Spurs into the potatoes all the way wait 5-8 min remove the potatoes then grab the Spurs with your pliers up by the leg grip it not hard and gently twist until it pops and comes right off you should be left with the soft cuticle of the spur might bleed slightly not much there are videos on YouTube that show step by step
