I noticed Sunday night one of my BL was panting in a nest box were she generally goes to roost. It was quite warm here but I didn't think enough for her to be panting. I felt her belly and I'm pretty sure there is an egg stuck. I did the warm Epsom bath Sunday night and let her go back to roost. It was even warmer Monday but with no egg I did the warm bath again and got some extra calcium in her. Checked the vent and I can feel the egg. This morning still no egg! I did the warm bath again. A little cooler today so did it for a full 30 min. Fed her more calcium and massaged her belly.

I feel what I can best describe as bubbles when I rub her belly. The egg is not moving.

This is her rump as of today. It's not very red or warm feeling. That has got to be an egg at the bottom. If not it's a very hard perfectly egg shaped tumor.

She is eating and pooping. Acting normal. She's not keen on human contact and is much calmer with the flock so after treatment I dry her off and put her back with her sisters.

How long can this go on? How much calcium can I give her in a day? I feel like I'm doing all I can but I want to be sure.

Thanks

Can you feel inside her vent with one finger and inch or two for a stuck egg. If tere is no egg, I would not give more calcium or baths. How long since her last egg was laid? Hens can suffer from many different laying and reproductive problems. Internal laying, salpingitis, ascites, and egg yolk peritontis are common problems in many hens. has she been feather-picked by other hens?

I have felt in her vent and can feel a hard egg shaped something... But I'm not in the oviduct. I'm not sure when she laid her last egg. I have 4 leghorns and they are all very private about their egg laying. As far as leaving the nest box if I stay to long. She isn't picked. Her feathers were very wet in that picture. That part that looks picked I think is just stretched. She is acting normal. The others are treating her normal. I can feel the egg from the outside in that pouchy part of her belly. It seems regular egg sized. Not giant like it's been stuck a long time building shell. That's the only part of her belly that seems swollen.

Can yo take her to a vet? Placing her in a humid warm bathroom might help her lay the egg. Sometimes chickens with salpingitis (infection of the oviduct) can have a large lash egg get stuck. Google salpingitis in chickens, and you can see what those pictures look like. I'm not sure that is what she has, but it is a possibility. Sometimes they can also have an oversized egg that can't be passed. A vet can evacuate the stuck egg. Let us know if she passes it.

It really looks and feels like an egg to me. When I vent check it feels smooth. Most lash eggs look abnormally shaped or lumpy. I realize they are all different but this feels like a perfect egg. She is acting completely normal. Poop is normal. Full crop at night. I just don't get it...
I may try the steam room and a little lube in the vent. No vet unfortunately. I have to figure it out.

Thanks for the help.

So it's a lash egg. It moved slightly and it is abnormal on the other side.

Now what? Will she pass it or she's just going to decline and die?

I laid her on a warm towel in lieu of a heating pad. She was calm for a little bit and then had enough. I lubed her vent and let her go. I don't care if ever lays eggs again. She's been healthy up until now. I would hate to loose her.

Make sure that she is drinking plenty of water, since that is another cause of egg binding. Google egg binding in chickens, and look for two links--beauty of birds and The Chicken Chick. Those have good information. you can also PM Casportpony. She has treated this many times.

Last I looked she was in a nest box. Hopefully she'll get it out or at least move it closer so I can be of more help to her. I'll have to PM Casportpony. See if there are any other tricks to this.
