Found BYC early this spring while researching breeds, coop designs, etc. I spent hours looking up various topics and appreciate everyone's willingness to share their experiences, both positive and no so positive. Finally decided to join. Growing up on a dairy farm, I remember butchering chickens and I had a pet hen named Featherbed, but we didn't raise chickens. I got a few ducks and geese as our children where growing up, but after retiring two years ago, wanted to raise chickens so we could have our own eggs. It took a couple of years to convince my husband, but he finally caved this spring. On April 5th, I got 8 pullets when they were 12 hours old. Three barred rocks, 3 RIRs, 1 buff orpington, and 1 EE make up our flock. They get along very well and we love watching them as they wander around the yard being chickens!

I have been busy over recent weeks building a coop and am almost done. They are living in the lower run section for the time being and love visiting with me as I am working on their new home. I have incorporated a variety of ideas from members in the coop construction; it was helpful to have so many resources at my fingertips during decision times - thank you again to those who share.

Our family now comes over for "chicken therapy," and even hubby is warming up to them. I have been a lifelong horse owner, so having chickens fits right in with my other critter chores. I always thought horse people were passionate but when I found BYC, I discovered a whole new level of devotion!

Hi and welcome to BYC - great to have you onboard with us. Please share photos of your coop, once it's finished - it's always great to see what other members have built. I hope that you enjoy being a member as much as the rest of us.

Best wishes

I just read(and commented on) your post explaining how you trained your chicks to go to the coop at night. Very good idea. I hope you will post other ideas you have. So nice to hear a fresh procedure - there are definitely more than one or two ways to condition them and food always gets their attention.

Some folks have even clicker trained their birds maybe in hopes of getting on "Chickens have talent," :)

Glad you joined us!

Welcome to BYC and yay more horse people! If you want to talk about horses, you can do that here in Other Pets and Livestock. There are lots of people who share the same interests here! And it sounds like you have a nice flock going there! Thanks for joining us!
