i stopped by all 3 stores yesterday to get more treats and pine shavings i like wal-mart's pine shavings since it's the cheapest and of proper size+ higher quality.. but for some reason they don't sell the 2 cu ft (4cuft) anymore instead just the 1200cc bags :/ so i checked petsmart-- they have pine shavings of similar size but it's about 2x more for the same size bag :/ i checked TSC (a long drive from my house)-- first time at a TSC store for me.. true.. they have a lot of stuff for chickens there .. but the store is in the middle of nowhere! i bought 2 bags of flake pine shavings from them.. it's not what i was expecting this is their flake pine shavings vs wal-mart I don't know how my chickens will like TSC flake pine shavings..but i guess we will see.. + they left the bags outside in front of the stores so the 115-120 degree heat turned some a portion of the pine shavings light brown-- Wal-mart Petsmart

I buy shavings at my local farm supply store. They are similar in size and texture to the TSC shavings. Same price. The TSC shavings being stored outside is the reason I don't buy them. Seems that many if not all of the bags at my local TSC have drawn moisture and are damp. The farm supply keeps theirs inside.

My opinion is the pine shavings you find at Walmart and the pet stores are intended for rodents and such. The bigger pine chips you find at the farm stores are more suited as litter for chickens.

the pine shavings from wal-mart worked just fine for chickens

smaller flakes will help reduce waste

but i'll give the TSC pine shaving a try.. i'll it in the run instead of the coop

Well Bruce, that run of TSC shavings is chunky style for sure. That's quite a bit coarser than what we have but ours is not nearly as fine as the stuff from WM.

TSC has Fine shavings, but I read in reviews that there was a lot of sawdust instead of fine shavings.

And your TSC shavings look just like mine.

Seems the bottom line from the reviews on the TSC site is that the quality in general and specifically the size of the flakes is very inconsistent. I'd guess that is likely caused by TSC changing suppliers that package the product for them.

from the reviews.. the current bags of pine shavings are not the same as the old ones

the price went up, it's chunkier and less in size
