Hello! And :welcome! The thing with bucks is that they smell anytime they're in rut, and it doesn't matter if a doe is in the pen with them or a doe isn't, they just smell. :/ And they smell awful! :sick I've been around quite a few. To avoid getting a buck, unless you really want one, I would get an already pregnant doe or a doe that is still lactating from when she had kids. I've only had goats milk once (that was enough for me to decide I didn't like it  ), but I thought it had a "goaty" taste. I asked other people what they thought of it and we all came to the conclusion that it tastes like how a goat smells (it doesn't taste like how a buck smells, every goat has a generic smell to them, and it's the generic smell that that milk tastes like). I don't think a separator would work, just because that's how all goats milk tastes, but maybe someone who knows more about milk, knows something I don't. :) Hopefully this helps and feel free to ask more questions! And also, is there any breed you're hoping to get?

There are a lot of things that affect the way goat milk tastes. How the milk is handled, what the goat is fed, and sometimes to goat herself are factors. Some lines of Toggenburgs produce undrinkable milk. While pygmies are not milk producers (they were bred for meat) Nigerian Dwarves, while small, are bred for milk. Generally, Nubians consistently produce good flavored milk. In spite of what you may hear, and what makes sense, the presence of the buck should not affect milk flavor. Unless, of course, you handle the buck and then milk a doe without washing your hands. For just a few does, owning a buck does not make sense.
