Personally I think it was heat stroke. It was 104 out. All the other hens were ok but I think she was even more compromised with the fluid build up issue. So she couldn't handle the heat. I have a huge area for shade and I soak the sand shade area down everyday to keep the girls cool. When I found her she had laid flat forward wings out and was having convulsions. I feel awful. I left huge chunks of ice out but the coopportunity gets so hot. I have a shade cover over the coop I need more batteries for the fan to keep the coop cool. My guess is she went into the coop at the highest heat point in the day to lay and couldn't cool down in time. :(

I found a huge black widow nesting in the coop near a nest box. I looked up signs of a bite on a chicken and I think she was bitten. I cleaned the whole coop and got the website out only.one widow in there.

That could certainly have been your problem. I am so sorry for your loss. There are plenty of ways to deal with hot temperatures but a spider bite is far more complicated. Best wishes.
