Wanted: Eggs from Jumbo Cornish Rock Hens

In a nutshell, I am hoping to find someone who has eggs from Jumbo Cornish Rock hens and some large meaty breed rooster that they wouldn't mind sending me to hatch out.

My husband and I just ordered a Brinsea Octagon 20 Advance and we are bursting with excitement. Okay, mostly I am. When it gets here, I don't think we'll be able to bear the anticipation for very long before we'll have to try it out. We also got it on clearance so we definitely need to find out if it works properly as soon as possible.

It has been 4 years since we used an incubator last. It was a Hovabator, and it gave us very poor, very disappointing hatch rates. It did manage to hatch a batch of mix breeds from my own flock, but when I went to hatch expensive purebred eggs from quality breeders, it failed miserably. I threw a lot of money (and potentially excellent chicks) out the window because of that thing.
So, I would like to witness this fine new yellow piece of technology in action and see what we were missing all those years ago.

We are not set up for keeping a flock at the moment, so we must go with meat birds that we can process as soon as possible.

I assumed that I would simply order eggs from a hatchery but their eggs are the same price as their day old chicks. I think that's kind of silly... Eggs that may not hatch at all, that I'd have to incubate for 21 days, vs. already hatched, sexed, and vaccinated day-old baby chicks for the same price... what kind of bargain is that! lol

Since only the hatcheries sell the Cornish Rock eggs and chicks, the next best thing for me would be eggs from a Cornish Rock hen. Five years ago I ordered these birds to raise and eat, and ended up keeping three hens all the way to laying age. They turned out to be excellent layers.

I've seen several people here on BYC who kept their "Jumbo Cornish x Rock" hens and ended up crossing them with a large rooster, and hatching eggs with great success. I'd love to attempt to hatch some of these crossed chicks. The fast growth from the Cornish Rock and element of surprise from whatever rooster covered them... sounds good to me!

Thanks everyone!
Jenne

About hatching the CX's- I crossed my CX hens with a Black Australorp roo, the offspring was terrific they grew faster than average chickens (Not as fast as the pure CX's) and were MUCH healthier than the pure CX's but the hatch rate was extremely low... But we kept around 30-40 of our crosses (hens) and crossed them with one of our crosses (we call fatty-fatties) to keep breeding the 50% CX's And the 2nd generation Fatty-fatties were just as great as our original crosses.
Our CX hens- Ours lived to be around 1 1/2 years old and were excellent layers, the rooster was around 3 years old and was a Black Australorp, when we first put him in with the hens we didn't think we would be capable, they were about 3 times his size easily, and it took about a month for him to get used to them and cover them.

Thanks for summarizing your experiences with your crosses!
I would definitely be interested in hatching your F2 Cornish descendants.
Would you be able to ship them?
Thanks!
Jenne

We could do it, but we free range all of our chickens together so we would have to separate the fatty fatties so you'd get the pure fatty fatties, but you could by some local "backyard mix" eggs just to test your incubator and we can still figure out the fatty fattie eggs if you're still interested.

Oh that would be great! For some reason I've found it to be next to the impossible to find anyone or anywhere that has what I'm looking for. Strange because I remember how people had eggs coming out of their ears four years ago when I was on BYC all the time. lol

I don't really want to hatch anything but meat birds because with a house full of animal lovers we are going to find any excuse to wait a little longer before processing. And we can't hatch anything pretty.... we won't want to slaughter the 'pretty ones'... LOL!

So yes, I would be thrilled to pop your "fatty fatty" eggs into this yellow machine we now have as the centerpiece of our living room.

Wait 'til I tell my husband. Today is my birthday and he's been wracking his brain to figure out what to get me... still hasn't come up with anything this whole time.. but at least finding the eggs we're looking for is a great birthday gift that the both of us can appreciate! He's usually the one dead set against getting more animals, but finally this time he's on my side.

Happy Birthday! It will take around three weeks too get the "fatty fatty" eggs, because we have to separate them fro, the general flock, and then we'll figure out the price of the eggs and all. And I don't know if you've seen my thread bu they are white with black splashes, some pure white. The "fatty-fatties" are definitely great for us! I mean they don't grow as fast, and are not as big as the pure CX's but they are definitely bigger and meater than "normal" chickens, and they are MUCH healthier than real CX's.

The reason you can't find cornish cross/cornish rock hatching eggs is because there is really only a few breeding facilities that own the parent stock. They are a very closely guarded secret of the poultry industry. Only the few companies that own the parent stock, know what exactly has been bred into the lines to produce them. Only the big hatcheries can get hatching eggs. The only option for the average chicken keeper, is to buy day-old chicks.

If you were to separate and start collecting eggs from the fatty fatty girls right now, what would be the possible combinations, rooster-wise? If you sent me a dozen (or however many fit in one shipping box) maybe I could pay for both now and have two hatches. That would work out nicely with incubation time and all. But I would like to get the business end of it done sooner rather than later because money comes in waves.. when we have it we have it, and when we don't we don't. lol Just tryina be honest!

If we separated them and collected eggs now, most would be only 1/4 CX's versus waiting about 3 weeks and having 1/2 CX's

I understand lol
I was just wondering what breeds of roos you had them in with at the moment.
My hudband and I agreed that we'll wait patiently for the three weeks for the fatty fatties to be bred to the fatty fatty roo. :)
Looking forward to it!
Thanks,
Jenne
