We have a batch of "heavy red" broilers and they are not taking to their grower. We've never had picky broilers, or broilers that don't clamour to gobble up their feed.

The local mill just sells all-in-ones - starter crumb, grower pellets - and while they were fine on the starter, when we switched to the grower at 6.5 wks, they just stopped eating.

Could it be the heat? We are having a very hot,dry summer, but they always have some shade and fresh water available.

Any thoughts? This is our fourth year raising broilers, and we're stumped.

Even if you don't want to do fermented feed, mixing just enough feed to last the day with as much water as it can soak up will possibly make it more palatable in the heat. It's messy, but will keep your growth from just stalling on the birds.

If you can try to ferment it by leaving it soaking in water 24-72 hours (we only had enough 5 gallon buckets to do 24 hours) I swear it makes the feed more palatable. Possibly they are snubbing you

since you switched it, but I doubt it. It probably is just the heat.

I'd try getting a single bag of feed from somewhere else and trying it. That will tell you if it's the birds or the feed.
