I've loved birds since I knew what a bird was, namely when I met an african gray parrot in a pet store when I was 5. It was love at first sight.
I turned 25 in January. Never have I had a bird of my own; until this past Sunday. I spent 2 hours each way on the bus with my mom to meet 2 parakeets (budgies) a yellow fenale and a blue male. Bought them both, and took them home. As it turns out, the female hates me; like really hates me. Broke out of her cage and attacked my face unprovoked. Unfortunately, she constantly attacked my boy, so they were separated and she now lives with my mom, who she seems to adore.
But, about my little boy... I named him Taquito after an inside joke between my sister and I. He is absolutely stunning, at least in my opinion. He has a huge cage meant for a macaw, tons of toys, and his favorite thing; millet.

This is mostly a show off post, but also me asking for help in taming him to step on hands and such. He's already cautiously eating from my hand.
If anyone kniws about their color mutations, I'd like opinions on that as well. To me, he looks like a pied opaline, but I could be wrong.

Well, I don´t know any answers to your questions, but you have some very nice birds there!

So, my sweet boy has been with me for 2 weeks and he is the sweetest bird. He's nipped me once when i annoyed him too much, so i gently backed off a bit and redirected so he wouldn't think a nip would make me go away. He hasn't nipped since.
He's taken a few little tastes of my finger but it doesn't seem at all aggressive, more exploring this new thing? He hasn't stepped up yet but we're getting closer. He let me stroke his chest tonight woth no biting or fussing!

You just need to spend a short period each day with your hand inside his cage, with your finger outstretched saying "step up" while holding your finger above his feet and against his chest. Make sure you have a treat ready for when he steps up, like lettuce. I spent 15-20 minutes each day just holding my hand inside the cage of a budgie I bought at Petco that was young but not at all tame, and even though it took months he is now the sweetest bird. If yours is already eating out of your hand and allowing you to pet his chest, then you're ahead. Just spend the training time each day for him to learn "step up". When he learns that when your finger is there he must step up, then teach him the "ladder" with your other hand, constantly making him climb from one finger to the other. Pretty soon it will be automatic.
