Want to guess the sex?

I'm trying to get the hang of sexing quail and trying to figure out the vent sexing. I have got it down pat on 5 weeks and older but can't for the life of me get it younger. Hoping someone here can guide me. I have three chicks (two older hens, and a young pair also). I am probably going to give the chicks away this week and wanted to keep one if it was a female.

Here's the pharaoh color. I'm thinking this is a boy because of the reddish but it's so spotted too, so I took a photo of the vent that will be next.

Boy right?

I'd kind of like to keep this one

but also a boy?

Unless they are of the brown ( jumbo Browns, Pharos ) coloration you will only be able to tell by vent sexing and they are still to young for that.
That's not completely true--if your bird lays an egg, it's probably female (haha). And if it crows, there's a 98.93251001% chance it's male.

Females have been known to crow, but it's pretty uncommon.

@Ladybirdmama your first two look like my Italians. Based on lack of spots on the chest I would say both are males. But they are still young so it's hard to tell. I don't know about your Tuxedos.

@lehouseofdog your first does look like a male based on the rust color coming in on the chest and the spots only being on the outskirts of the chest. Again, don't know about your Tuxedo.

Six weeks is normally when you can vent sex but chances are males will crow before then. I had one crow at 2 weeks. Of course if you have a bunch of males the ones lower in the pecking order will be less inclined to crow.

Ah no! Their chests are still fuzz vs feathers and there are a few darks spots I can see. My fingers are still crossed. I really can't see being able to keep them if there's more than one male :( We really want/need 4 females but if there were one male I'd probably just keep him. Hopefully I can trade someone or something if need be. Thanks for your input!
