International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

@Chooksman - So the primary purpose of the Black cross will be to enhance / reinforce the dark egg genes and introduce the genes for pink undertones in the legs? I’m intrigued by this project and am still learning the breeding genetics. Keith

here the method I m going a use . I made this formula my self .

First crosses ;
1} Solid Black cockerels E/ER. i+/i+ over a dominant white pullets ER/ER .I/i+ = all the cockerels chicks will be dominat white half solid and half ER copper based . all the pullets chicks will be coloured .half solid black E/ER other half will be BC .
I ll keep a solid white cockerels and a solid black pullets from this cross . this population is F1A.

2} Dominant White rooster ER/ER. S/s+ .I/i+ only one copy of a dominant white gene. crossed to Solid Black pullets E/ER .. I ll get 25% male chicks solid White E/ER. 25% male chicks solid Black E/ER. 25% pullets chicks dominant white ER/ER. and 25% pullets chicks BC. I only keep the best Solid white and a solid Black cockerel.

2} Solid Black cockerel E/ER Crossed to recessive White pullets Ewh/Ewh. c+/c+. I ll get 25% male chicks solid Black .E/Ewh. split white C/c+. 25% male chicks BC ER/Ewh .255 pullets chickssolid Black split white E/Ewh. C/c+. 25% Black copper impure .
I only keep the solid Black /split white cockerels and pullets . the BC are Cull .

@Chooks man - I thought it was definitely odd behavior for sure. I’m gonna watch his development closely - he may turn out to be an overly agrressive mating Coq. A few years ago I had a chick start crowing around 2 weeks old - he developed a large comb too. That’s strange - makes me wonder if there is a gentically anomaly at work with the early crowers. Keith

all the sex linked genes will be off set in this situation . not a normal growth pattern .

nice to observe and take note .other wise we will never know .

the Second Crosses . next year .
1} I ll take the best pullets from F1A cross and mate them back to they sire Solid Black and the other 2 solid black rooster I have. I ll get 25% solid Black pure E/E cockerels . 50% impure solid Black E/Er pullets and cockerels 25% BC pullets.
I only keep the best pure solid Black cockerels E/E.

2}I take the best solid Black and Solid white cockerels from F!B the cross #2 and mate the to the solid Black pullets from the F!A . Cross #1. I ll get I ll get 50% solid dominant white pullets and cockerels single gene E/E. I/i+ .from the solid white cockerels . I ll keep all the dominant solid white .
from the solid Black cockerel over F1A solid Black pullets .I ll get 25% pure solid Black cockerels E/E . 50% impure E/ER cockerels and pullets. 25% BC pullets . I ll keep the best of Solid Black pullets and cockerels .

3} I ll mate the F1C . from Cross #3 .the Split white /solid Black cockerels and pullets . I ll get 25% solid white .E/Ewh .c+/c+ cockerels .50% solid black cockerels and pullets E/ER split white. 25% impure BC .
only keeping the pure White cockerels and a Split white pullets .

thoses are my first 2 years .the rest will come later .

Well, I witnessed a behavior today that I haven’t seen before. I was hanging out in the grow out coop with my 6-7 week old BCMs to observe them for a while when one of the cockerels mounted a pullet. I have never seen that behavior in young chicks. Kids, they wanna grow up so fast these days! Anyone else seen this behavior in such young chicks.

Keith

unfortunately I have seen it. I keep telling my friend to keep cockerels separate from pullets.

@Bantambird

some photos please of your young marans .
