Egg shells

My girls are finally beginning to lay eggs. I have collected 3 eggs so far and I have found 2 times broken egg shells, one in the nest and one in the floor. Unless the predators are extremely small, they can not get to my girls or their eggs. A snake could but I know enough about that, being a former snake owner, that snakes will eat the entire egg right there. I am wondering if my girls could be pecking at their own eggs, there is never any egg left from the shell, or is there a predator that is getting in somehow? Has anyone dealt with anything like this before?

Sometimes new layers can lay whilst on the roost, and lay soft shelled eggs. In both cases, the chickens will eat the eggs. If you are feeding them layers feed and / or oyster shell then I would keep an eye on things but not get overly concerned at this point.
