I have one duckling 21 days old. When can I put it with other ducks? Right now it is really scared of other ducks. It sleeps inside, will he/she be ok when I do put her out when it gets older? It goes everywhere with me, if it flys off will it know how to servive?

Are you getting other ducks, planning to give it away, or planning to release it?

The likelihood of it surviving if released are VERY LOW. Between predators and just plain not knowing how to fend for itself.....not good. It sounds as though it has imprinted on you. How old was it when you got it?

More information would be helpful.....

Hello! As a person with ducks and chickens, I do know that when you are getting ready to transition them to a different environment, and put them in with other animals, you should use a " chicken play pen " or in your case a " duck play pen. " Put you duck in a pen of some sort, and place the pen in the other animal's enviorment. Then none of the animals can hurt each other, but they start to get used to each other. When you think she's ready, let her out. I think you should wait a while though, she still seems kinda young to be placed with other animals. She needs to be able to defend herself.

Is this a wild mallard you found? I'm afraid you are not allowed to keep wild mallards, and since it has been taught to rely on you for food and protection, you can't just release it with other wild ducks. You need to call a wildlife rehab center in your area.

Was 1 or 2 days old, yes it has imprinted and I love it so much, I didn't know I could keep it. If I take to a rehabilitation will it be ok, it loves me too. And has always slept inside. I take it to the lake and river all the time. I feel guilty like it would think I abandoned it

I know that sounds stupid.

I would love to keep but if it's illegal I don't know what to do, I have a friend that has a mallard and 2 other ducks, I just asked her and she said she would take it. I'm so torn, I know it should go back to the wild but it's not scared of people at all.

You need to call a Wildlife Rehabilitator.
Call your local animal control who can give you the name of a place to call. It is illegal to keep wild animals and you can be fined.
