Hi everyone! I have some chicks about 2 weeks old and their skin seems red. Is this normal? Otherwise they seem to be fine although they are preening more unless that is just part of their feathers growing in. I am new to raising chickens so I am not quite sure what is normal and what is cause for concern. Thanks!

Red skin can be a sign of irritation. It can also indicate infection underlying that skin, especially if the skin feels hotter to the touch in that spot. But the red skin may just be a temporary irritation, perhaps getting pecked.

Examine the chick very closely for any sign of injury or parasites. Monitor the chick's behavior and stools. If the chick is lethargic, you have additional evidence something is wrong.
