When I was getting feed for my flock I asked the guy if they knew what breeds they would be getting in the Spring. He told me he didn't have a clue, but he did know what they were getting next month!

Is this common? They normally only have chicks from Jan-June, this is the first time I've heard of it.

Sounds like it would be worth checking out. They must have the demand for them - still have time to do some serious growing up before winter.

Oh, I will be.

I talked to a lady who worked there and she said it was because Ideal gives them sort of a discount. They get shipments in from the 8th of September all the way through to the end of October.

On the 22nd of September they are getting in RIRs, BRs, SLWs, EEs, Cornish X and Welsummers.

I'm planning on getting one of everything EXCEPT the Cornish X.

Fall is a perfect time to get chicks, in a way it makes more sense than getting them in spring. Spring chicks start laying just in time for the days to grow short and slow down production. A fall chick will be ready to lay in the spring and should give you a great spring, summer and fall full of eggs.

My local places usually do a fall run of chicks. Not for near as long as in the spring, and a much smaller selection. It's usually the "core" breeds--Reds, sex links, rocks, EE and buff Orps.

That's rare. Most feed stores have chicks Jan-May/June. Some will have them until August. There was a feed store in our area that had chicks year-around, but they went out of business
