So, they are both 20 wks old this coming Sat. They are very attached and he is very protective of her, she has become less wanting to be sweet with us now, too. They are in love, I'm sure! She was always more social and easier to carry when younger. Now...he is the one that is always with us and she is following. But, he is more likely to bite if someone tries to do anything he doesn't like! It's a harder bite now, too! I think he follows us to remind us who's the boss! He doesn't chase me, but he started to chase my brother who was in the yard petting one of the dogs! Sometimes he comes up to me, as if he will ....but he knows I'm not running from him so he just stops.

I saw them in the pool yesterday...getting frisky...so not knowing for sure if this is the very first time, do I have to watch for eggs about a month from now? The dogs are out there with them and they may find an egg first! My dogs are afraid when the ducks come up to them as they may get pecked on if they don't move! I have 4 dogs...one is 7#, one is 9#, one is 45# and the big guy is over 100#....and they all run from the ducks! Goofy! But I'm glad no one has any interest in them at all. I think it is because we used to put them in an enclosed other yard we have inside our big yard, so they have seen each other for quite awhile.

Anyway...they are quite comical as I put a cabbage head in their pool to play with and eat and good old Donald was feeling quite amorous yesterday as he was trying to have his way with the cabbage! LOL!! He had the cabbage submerged and he was on top of it bobbing his head for all he's worth! Hysterical!

Sounds like my last drake, Daffy! He'd chase me around the yard for all it's worth and would always chase my 40# dog around too! Said dog is now scared of the new ducklings!

So, do I wait for about 4 wks to start looking for any eggs? Also, do y'all correct them if they chase or bite? Never had to correct a duck! LOL!

There is no time frame for when she will lay just because they are mating. It's not like mating "gets her pregnant" and so an egg pops out. :)

She is young and may not lay an egg until next spring. Then again, she could lay one next week or a month from now. It all depends on hormones, season, hours of daylight as well as age. :)

I used to try to "correct" him by mounting him for about 5 minutes at a time. It would work for about a day, and he'd be back to chasing me again. I ended up locking him in his coop whenever I was cleaning or working with the hens.
