what color ameracauna comes from black and buff pure am cross

I put a black roo with a light buff hen both true ameracauna.her chicks are all a light silver yellow very light almost white there are a few black spots on some very small spots.is this color what they call a splash? can these be shown? or are they easter eggers due to the color cross?

Go to the Sex linked information thread, and search the charts in the first post, and see if you get any helpful information. While it may not give you info specific to Ams, it may give you enough info to go on based on pure black roo over pure buff hen. There's often a lot of brain power visiting that thread, so you could post a ? there.

I’m not sure what you mean by “light buff”. Light buff is not a recognized Ameraucana color, buff is.

Splash is made with the blue feather gene, so what you have are not true splash. When you show chickens, the judge does not look at genetics though, just the chicken. If the colors are right the judge will accept the bird regardless of what genetics made the color. However, if you look at this Ameraucana Breeders Club page, you’ll see that Splash is not an accepted color. I don’t show chickens but I’d assume you could not show a splash Ameraucana since it is not an accepted color. I could be wrong, maybe it could be shown under “blue”. If I am wrong hopefully someone with direct knowledge will correct me.

Buff can have some strange effects on black. In theory when you cross a black chicken with a buff chicken you get a solid black chicken, but reality often does not work that way. Buff has some strong modifiers in it that can and often does change some feathers from black to some other color, sometimes yellow, sometimes orange. The shade can vary a lot from different crosses. This can be a few scattered feathers, it can be some pretty big areas. I don’t know if you are looking at the down or the feathers of the chicks?

What you are describing just doesn’t sound right, the black areas should be pretty pronounced. How sure are you that they are both true Ameraucana? But chicken genetics can be pretty messy. I can actually come up with a scenario where you could get something pretty similar to what you describe, especially if you are talking feathers and not down. Just how white are those chicks? Dominant White only affects black feathers. A pure buff chicken would not show it. If your buff has dominant white, that would change what should be black chicks in the offspring to a yellow that would feather out white. It’s possible that some black could leak through, thus giving you a few scattered black feathers when crossed with a black chicken. I’s kind of farfetched but with chicken genetics about anything is possible.

that sounds like whats happened i got the ams from a breeder from the Ameracauna breeder directory she lives in tn.the hen is a buff sorry for the light buff i dont know why im ignorant in my ameracauna lingo lol! the am roo is Beautiful and unfortunately was attacked and killed by a dog two days ago .so the hen in question layed ten eggs that were incubated with twenty other olive eggers but all blue eggs are hers.the ten chicks hatchef staggered over a week in two incubators and one by one light colored little chick with small black feathered spots appeared.im ecstatic the diversity in my flock is great .I am new at chickens and am buying pure am trios to breed from now on i posted pure ams cuz i know a lot of confused ee owners think they own ams.Thank all of you for your input i will try to post pics of these chicks they are one to two weeks old so different stages of feathering! thanks again.donna

Have you tried chatting with that breeder? They may be able to give you a good explanation since they should know the genetics. I’d like to hear that explanation myself.

when my daughter gets home from school ill take pictures of hen and her eleven lil chicks(i thought it was ten!).. i might just be explaining the color wrong and theyre buff babies???? i dunno... im a little new to genetics and all the color possibilities but they are 100-% buff hen black roo out if blue egg pure ameracauna.Thank you for coming on this quest of figuring out what happened or what color they are lol.

so my ten year old couldnt get any pics to post either. but basically they are the lightest yellow with there real feathers looking kinda silver cream?? ill keep tryin
